Dr. Pen MicroneedlingInstruction Guide
MICRONEEDLING SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED ONCE A WEEK IF USING COSMETIC GRADE DEPTHS UP TO 0.5MM AND ONLY ONCE EVERY 28 DAYS IF USING MEDICAL GRADE ABOVE 0.5MM
PRE-NEEDLING
Welcome to the exciting world of microneedling! 🙂
Important note before starting, minimize bleeding please consider limiting your use of anti-coagulant medications like Aspirin, anti- inflammatory medication, drinking alcohol or taking fish oil tablets at least 24 hours before treatment.
You Will Need: Your Dr.Pen device charged,a clean towel, brand new cartridge, alcohol solution, numbing cream (optional), cotton pads, surgical gloves (optional), serum (hyaluronic acid is recommended).
- Cleanse your face to remove any dirt, natrual oil makeup and dry with a clean towel.
- If you are applying a numbing cream, apply to cleansed and dried face and wait for 15 minutes or until the cream takes effect. Consider covering your face with saran wrap to keep your skin as clean and sterile as possible.
- Remove numbing cream with a cotton pad
- With another clean cotton pad, wipe over area with alcohol solution until face is clean and cream is removed. (This does not need to be excessive)
- Ensure device is charged or you’re near a power source if using while plugged in
MICRONEEDLING
- Open brand new cartridge sachet and attach a cartridge into your device. Push the needles into the pen firmly straight down and TWIST to lock it into place.
- Ensure hands are clean and don’t touch the tip or needles of the cartridge. You may also wear gloves (latex is recommended)
- Choose your desired needle depth by rotating the dial on your device. If you’re using the Hydra Pro, you cannot change the needle depth
- Now choose your desired speed level on your device
- At this time you can set the pen down, apply your serum to your face or just to the areas you wish to work on. You are now ready to begin.
- Apply drop a few drops of the serum onto the area you wish to needle and glide the pen over the area in either a circular or asterisk motion.
- If you are microneedling without serum, the same motions apply
- Microneedle over entire face and neck, or whichever area of your body you wish to treat
- Needle over each area 3-4 times.
- NOTE: There is no need to press hard, if the depth and speed have been set please allow the machine to do its job and firmly, but gently guide it along your skin
- For under-eye area, please use the lowest needle depth of 0.25mm
POST-NEEDLING
- Wipe face clean with a cotton pad solution. Gently reapply alcohol or skin balm solution to the treated areas
- Apply or reapply the serum, such as hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin, this is the best time as the microchannels during the treatment will remain open for a short period after.
- You will experience mild redness and swelling after needling, as well as needle point bleeding. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about, you may spot dry with a clean cotton pad as necessary
- Avoid working out/sweating or applying makeup for 24 hours. If you must go out into the sun please apply a high functioning sunscreen at least SPF 50. Your skin is very vulnerable after treatment and needs time and space to heal, so avoid all undue pressure
- If applying makeup is unavoidable, try to use one specifically for post-treatments or for sensitive skin to avoid irritation.
AFTER-CARE
- 24 Hours After:
- You may cleanse and moisturize your skin as normal from the day after your treatment, but please avoid anything with fragrances, acids (lactic acid, AHA, BHA) or active ingredients. (vitamin c, retinols) This is the time when your skin needs a break, just light moisturizing to protect yourself
- Apply a high quality SPF when leaving the house, and avoid direct and extended exposure to sunlight
- Avoid heavy exercise and swimming for 24 hours
- Do not apply any “active” skincare i.e AHAs, BHAs, vitamin A or vitamin C or anything containing fragrances
- After 48 hours you may begin to gently exfoliate the dry skin to help speed up the recovery process and reduce flaking
3-5 Days Post-Treatment:
Continue to refrain from use of:
- Chemical exfoliants i.e AHA, BHA, lactic acid
- Vitamin A/retinol/retinoid or anything containing these ingredients
- Toners
- Some skin types may still risk irritation from fragranced products at this point too
- Be sure to apply an SPF daily and avoid direct and extended sunlight for up to 1 week post-needling.
It’s very important to hydrate in the days following your microneedling treatment. Apply hydrating serums and moisturisers morning and night (avoiding the ingredients listed above) as you will experience some mild redness, dryness, tightness and flaking for a few days afterwards.
